Securing funding for the South East Technological University is difficult when all the region's TDs aren't on the same page.

That's the view of Waterford's Matt Shanahan who says a decision on the SETU's headquarters should have been made before the university was set up.

He says funding is vital now to make it a success and a lot of work has to go on in the background to make sure that government and other agencies award it.

Deputy Shanahan told Déise Today it needs to happen as soon as possible.

"I have a concern that Minister Harris may not be the Minister when the rotation comes around and any new Minister, as far as I'm concerned, will not be bound by any promises he has made to Waterford," he said.

He also says the President of Ireland should have been at the launch of the University.

Deputy Shanahan says he was hugely disappointed that Minister for Higher Education, Simon Harris, was the most senior representative at the ceremony last Monday.

The Friday before that, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar had paid a visit to Waterford.

But Deputy Shanahan told Déise Today that he should have been there for the launch.

He had also asked the Taoisech to clear his diary to be there but he responded saying he had not received an official invite from the Department.

In terms of Waterford TD's not being on the same page, Deputy Shanahan said this is clear when it comes to the hospital, airport, and infrastructure.

"That's something that needs to change and that's really something government needs to address," he said.
