A Waterford TD has called upon the government to offer greater supports to businesses with spiralling energy costs.

Deputy Matt Shanahan raised the need for specific sectoral supports in the Dail this week.

He highlighted the case of the butcher industry as one example, with many of their costs having multiplied in recent months.

He noted that one South East company has seen their bills go from 8 thousand a month to 48 thousand.

Addressing the Tanaiste, he said the government's TBESS scheme needs to open to applications as soon as possible.

He asked when applications will be opened, stating that there is a need for urgency.

Deputy Shanahan said that two butcher shops have closed in the space of a week.

"These businesses will not remain viable for too long more," he said.
