18 schools in Waterford are to benefit from almost €2 million in funding.
€1.93 million will be allocated to 10 primary schools and eight post primary schools under the Summer Works Scheme, which is designed to allow schools carry out small and medium-scale works to improve and upgrade existing school buildings.
It's understood that the projects earmarked for the Waterford schools under this funding include window improvement / replacement works to assist in ventilation, investment in science labs, electrical and mechanical works, as well as repairs and improvements to external yards and play areas.

Projects are "encouraging"
Reacting to the announcement, Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People, Waterford's Mary Butler said “I am encouraged to see SWS projects announced this early in the year so that these 18 schools in Waterford will have a good lead-in period to plan and deliver their projects in summer 2022."
Minister Butler added that Waterford’s school communities have done "an exceptional job" in adapting to the changes required to operate safely in a Covid-19 environment. “Our principals, teachers, pupils, school staff, boards of management and parents deserve great credit for the collective, collaborative and consistent effort which ensured Waterford’s schools remained mostly operational during this pandemic,” she said.
Minister Butler said it's also envisaged that a new Multi-Annual Summer Works Scheme will be opened for applications in Q2 2022, which will have a strong climate action aspect to it.
