Affordability, certainty, and security are some of the main concerns for renters.
That's according to local Councillor John Pratt who is calling on the government to do more for renters.
There is currently a ban on evictions in place that is due to expire at the end of March.
The ban expires at the end of March and the government is expected to announce a decision on whether to extend it or not within the next fortnight.
Councillor Pratt added:" We have a precarious situation facing everyone in Waterford if the eviction ban is lifted. The reality is the eviction ban on its own is not going to sort out the issues. We need to start building more houses even if it means we are exceeding our expectations. This is the only way that we are going to sort the issues."
Waterford experienced a 20.2% rent increase in 2022, the highest out of all Irish cities.
That's according to the latest daft.ie report, which shows rent in Waterford city is now €1,432 on average per month.
Councillor Pratt says it's impossible for some people to get onto the property ladder. He added: "The increase in rent over the last number of years has made it difficult for people to gert by. We all know the increases in the cost of living and everything, in general, are making it impossible especially for first-time buyers. It is near impossible for them to get into the marketplace at the moment."
