Waterford named Ireland's cleanest city in latest IBAL litter survey

Waterford has been named Ireland's cleanest city in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) rankings.

The final litter survey for 2023 by the business group shows Waterford city retains its ‘clean’ status in 13th position in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide.

The An Taisce report for Waterford City stated that it continues to score very well in the IBAL litter league, helped by seventeen out of the twenty-four sites surveyed getting the top litter grade.

The report praised the overall presentation and maintenance of sites , citing The People’s Park as an area which has typically been top ranking and yet there are works ongoing to improve it.

The Riverwalk along the Quay and Merchant’s Quay Car Park were both noted as having been recently improved and enhanced.

Other top-ranking sites included Lady Lane, Broad Street/Barronstrand and The Medieval Quarter, with the latter described as being an exceptionally well presented and maintained environment.

Ballybeg again scored very well with six out of the ten sites getting the top litter grade,

While litter levels rose slightly nationwide, over 60 per cent of towns surveyed were deemed clean in 2023, with Maynooth claiming the title of overall cleanest town.
