Waterford man to be sent forward for trial for alleged historical sexual assaults

A man has appeared in Waterford District Court today on four counts of historical sexual assault charges which are alleged to have occured between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.

By order of the court following an application by the solicitor for the defense, Mr. Michael Lanigan,  the Waterford man cannot be named to protect the identities of third parties.

It is alleged that the accused, a male aged in his 50s, committed sexual assault on a female at an unknown address in Waterford city during the dates in question.

The first count of sexual assault is alleged to have taken place on a date between July 1, 2004 and August 31, 2004.

The second count of sexual assault is alleged to have occured on a date between September 1, 2004 and October 31, 2004.

The third count is alleged to have occured on a date between May 1, 2005 and June 13, 2005.

The fourth and final count of sexual assault is alleged to have been committed on a date between May 1, 2005 and June 30, 2005.

The book of evidence was served before the court today at approximately 12.30pm and the man has been sent for trial in Waterford Circuit Criminal Court for the next session, which is due to commence March 7 at 10.30am.

Continuing bail was granted under a series of conditions, including that the accused must continue to reside at his place of residence; he must not interfere with any current or potential witnesses or parties involved; and he must sign on at Waterford Garda Station.

An alibi warning was issued to the accused, and continuing legal aid was granted due to no change in his personal circumstances.
