Dan Mulhall has served as the Irish ambassador to Great Britain since 2013 and will soon be travelling to America to replace Anne Anderson who is retiring from the role.
Mr. Mulhall is a native of the Lower Yellow Road in Waterford City and was educated at Mount Sion before continuing to UCC and Murdoch University in Australia.
He previously held ambassadorial positions in Malaysia and Germany.
In a tweet, Mr Mulhall thanked those involved in granting him the Freedom of the City of London, and said it was a recognition of the unique links between Ireland and the British capital.
