After indulgent spending on family members (or oneself) over Christmas, people are counting the pennies until the next payslip at the end of this month.

Though Christmas is a time to give back and spend a little extra cash, it's the weeks that follow that can be difficult for many.

MABS is a national independent organisation that offers money advice and can also intervene with creditors if you are struggling with repayments.

Jackie Quinn is a Money Adviser with the local branch of MABS in Waterford.

She says support is there for those who need it.

"January is often a time of financial challenge for many people due to overspending during the Christmas season. The aim for January is to really maximise your income and review your income versus expenditure.

"MABS is a money advice and budgeting service. It is a free, independent, and confidential service  available in Waterford and nationwide for over 30 years. We have offices located in Ferrybank, Tramore, Dungarvan, and Waterford City.

"People can avail of our services through face-to-face or telephone appointments. MABS is available at 0818 07 20 50 or via email at [email protected]

"The idea would be writing down the total income you are guaranteed for the month followed by the list of your priority bills expenses. January is a good time to look at your finances and complete a financial health check and plan for the year ahead.

"Managing your day-to-day bills and planning for future expenses within your household such as communions, confirmations, holidays, or unexpected expenses, which happen to us all, will take away that unnecessary financial strain on you and your household.

"MABS also has an online budgeting tool which may be useful to people  and this is available on our website at mabs.ie."
