Waterford has one of the lowest rates of road fatalities per capita, according to new data.

Statistics compiled by the Irish Independent show a rate of 1.57 per 100,000 people this year as there have been two deaths locally so far.

That's up by one on last year.

Ireland as a whole is facing a 16 percent increase in road deaths for 2022 and Sligo has the highest rate.

138 people lost their lives on Irish roads this year, which is an increase of 20 compared to 2021.

Sligo is the county with the highest fatality rate, recording eight road traffic deaths per 100,000 of the population.

That figure is six times higher than the rate last year.

Monaghan, Limerick and Cavan also had a high fatality rate, at 7.7, 6.3 and 6.16 fatal crashes so far this year respectively.

The figures published in the Irish Independent were compiled by campaign group, Parc, ahead of the Christmas period.

They told the paper the Garda Roads Policing Units need additional resources to deal with the current increase in fatal collisions.
