More than 40% of burglars get into houses through the front door and 45% through the back door.

That's according to Waterford Gardaí who are urging us to be extra conscious of securing our houses as winter approaches.

They're issuing advice as part of their annual 'Lock up, Light up' campaign.

The aim is to reduce the number of burglaries around the county by just making sure your house is as secure as it can be.

Speaking on this week's Waterford Garda Watch, Garda Brian Quirke gave the statistics and advice.

"You have to make sure all doors are locked, and windows as well," he said.

He had the following tips for keeping your home safe and secure:

If you have an alarm on your house, make sure you use it.

Don't leave large amounts of cash lying around the house.

Don't leave car keys or valuables lying on a table by the front or back door. A burglar may see the keys and rob your car.
