A number of Waterford councillors have called for more respect to be shown toward them on social media.

It comes as new legislation has come into effect regarding complaints against elected members of all councils.

Cllr. Lola O'Sullivan took aim at Facebook pages at this month's Plenary meeting of Waterford Council.

She says people should not make it personal when it comes to political criticism.

Councillors have called on those who operate social media pages to delete negative comments about opposing politicians.

Cllr. O'Sullivan told Mayor John O'Leary that councillors are being called names online, but that he is too.

"I think they need to be mindful that we have families and feelings," she said.

Green Party Councillor Cristiona Kiely says its sadly part and parcel with the role.

She said a few days before she started work she had to sit her children down and explain that they would probably see stuff written on Facebook about her.

"I encouraged them to not read the comments," she said.

Cllr. Kiely is in support of Cllr. O'Sullivan's suggestion to have comments deleted.
