Waterford City South Independent Councillor Donal Barry has suggested acknowledging European Maritime Day.

The day seeks to raise awareness of seas and oceans, paying tribute to their importance to the environment, economy and culture.

Usually celebrated around the 20th May, Cllr Barry raised the matter at the most recent Waterford City and County Council plenary meeting.

"We should celebrate European Maritime Day in some form every year because of the importance of our coast and marine to the local and national economy," he said.

"Even a display for schools to teach children the importance of the maritime industry," he added.

Director of Services at Waterford Council, Michael Quinn acknowledged the merit of the suggestion. He said there is no capacity for a new festival but that European Maritime Day could be marked in some other way.
