There are calls to bring former Garda Stations in County Waterford back into use as accommodation.

Conditional planning permission was recently granted for plans to convert Ballyduff Upper's Garda Station building into a six-bedroom short stay facility.

Fine Gael Councillor Liam Brazil says the potential of other similar buildings should be examined - including in Leamybrien.

He is calling on the council to ask the Office of Public Works if it can buy the building and put it back into use.

"This barracks is lying idle for the past ten years and OPW came about two years ago and they spent an awful lot of money on the outside of the building, repairing the outside, and also painting it," Councillor Brazil said.

He suggests that it could be used for social housing or as a centre for refugees.

"I think it would be fantastic for the likes of Leamybrien, Kill, and Rathgormack to see that brought back in again," he said.
