Waterford Chamber remains optimistic about the future of retail in Waterford - despite the closure of Argos.

The local store on Great George's Street is one of thirty four branches which will shut nationwide.

Speaking to WLR News, Chamber CEO, Gerald Hurley, says efforts must now focus on other things.

"While it's a blow to the City Centre, we must now put our efforts collectively into securing a new long term tenant," he said.

Gerald believes that a vibrant Centre is still within our grasp.

He says figures relating to retail spending provide a cause for optimism.

"The retail expenditure in existing stores is estimated at 726 million," Gerald says.

This could be increased if Waterford people were only to shop in Waterford. It's estimated that roughly €614 million is spent by Waterford people in other counties.

Gerald added that there is approximately 635,000 people within a 60 minute drive from the City Centre who also contribute to the retail sector here.

These figures are according to a feasibility report carried out by EY.
