There are grants available for businesses to help get them started at becoming more energy efficient.

As well as this, every business should avail of an energy audit.

So says Grainne Kennedy, Climate Action Co-Ordinator with Waterford City and County Council.

She said when it comes to energy costs small businesses probably have the least amount of money to play around with.

Earlier this year small businesses in the county were able to do a short training course on energy efficiency and in return they got a credit on rates.

Grainne told WLR that there are people out there who can help and it's important to get your business assessed.

"Someone in your business should be on top of this to keep an eye on it for you, get access to the grants, and we'd be happy to speak with anyone to get information," she said.

With the grants, businesses in Waterford have availed of solar panels and upgraded insulation.

Through SEAI, there is also a free audit up to €2,000.
