UPDATE: Petrol fumes are now being blamed for what was earlier thought to be a gas leak in Waterford City.

The Apple Market remains cordoned off as the council and fire service deal with the situation.

WLR News understands petrol had gotten into the storm drains and the fumes were coming up in that area of the city.

The fire service responded just before lunchtime this afternoon after members of the public reported smelling gas.

However, Bord Gáis have since visited the area and are understood to be satisfied that no gas is being leaked.

The drains are being flushed at the moment (4pm).
