This provides the family and friends of alcoholics with an opportunity to meet and share their thoughts and feelings.

It is open to anyone who may be worried for themselves or a loved one.

Seamus, a former alcoholic, told WLR that anonymity is key to the service they provide.

"We all depend on one another for this anonymity. I don't want you to go out on the footpath and speak about me and I wouldn't go out on the foorpath and speak about you. It just works vice versa because we have to look after one another," Seamus said.

Moira is another former alcoholic who attends AA meetings.

Speaking to WLR, she shared her experiences with AA.

She says she had tried the meetings two or three times in the past before, but it's only in the last four years that she decided to return with the intentions of really making a difference in her life.

"My life is very happy and peaceful. I have a beautiful quality of life today. AA is very much foremost in my life. My recovery is foremost in my life and I love it," Moira said.

In the past, Moira had been "drowning in alcohol" and using it as a crutch.

Speaking on the meetings, Moira added that interacting with people who are suffering in the same way helped her to feel less alone; something that many alcoholics may feel.

"When you come to a meeting, you're with people, you're identifying with people, you're with like-minded people and it becomes a family almost, you know? It has become a family for me, that's for sure," she said.
