An outbreak of Covid-19 has led to a complete stop being put on visitors at University Hospital Waterford.

It's understood there has been a sharp rise in the number of patients with the virus.

In a statement this afternoon, UHW said visiting will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances, such as for critically ill patients or for children.

In these cases, the person must arrange their visit by contacting the relevant ward manager.

Those visitors must wear a surgical face-mask while in the hospital which covers the mouth and nose at all times.

Visiting may be further suspended during periods of Outbreak to minimise transmission of infection.

While the outbreak affects the whole hospital, it has a direct impact on three wards.

All visiting arrangements will be reviewed on a daily basis.

The hospital is thanking the public for their co-operation.
