University Hospital Waterford has apologised to the family of a teenager for "completely unacceptable" treatment by a consultant at its emergency department.

It follows another apology given to a female patient over an interaction with the same doctor.

University Hospital Waterford told both women it accepted the incidents had caused them "unnecessary upset and distress".

The most recent apology concerned a 15-year-old girl who had presented to A&E in pain but was refused entry by the consultant and not assessed.

The hospital apologised to her this week.

In the other case, a 29-year-old woman, who was in severe pain with long-term ovary issues, alleged she had been "verbally abused" by the consultant in front of other patients and staff in 2020.

The woman told the HSE she "left the hospital in tears and still in pain".

UHW later apologised.

The consultant Brendan McCann, is the clinical lead for the hospital's emergency department - he told the Irish Examiner he was not allowed to comment but said A&E has been especially stressful during the pandemic.

UHW General Manager Grace Rothwell wrote to both patients to say that their treatment was "completely unacceptable" and that she would personally address it.
