Events are taking place across County Waterford today and later this week, to celebrate Ukraine's Independence Day.

President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky says his country has been 'reborn' since being invaded by Russia on the 24th of February this year - with millions of Ukrainians now having fled their homeland.

People in Kyiv have woken-up to air raid sirens on a day when they would normally celebrate breaking away from the Soviet Union.

In Waterford City - mass will take place at 5pm in The Cathedral. All are welcome as people gather to celebrate and remember all Ukrainians especially those who have been killed and injured during the course of the ongoing war.

In Dungarvan today, local Ukrainians are meeting on the Causeway Bridge at 1pm - across from Eurospar Abbeyside, where they will link to make a chain of freedom.

Anastasiia is one of the organisers and told WLR News what the event will entail.

"We're meeting in Dungarvan on the bridge near 1pm. It's going to be a big party for us. We will build a chain of freedom, sing songs and be together, because that is the least that we can do right now. We are praying for Ukraine, Ukraine really needs this now."

On Sunday, there will be a further Mass at the Cathedral at 2pm and a rally will take place at 3pm to acknowledge and condemn the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
