A Ukrainian man who has been living in Dungarvan with 20 years has appealed for help in securing accommodation for his family.

Dmitri Ostashevsky says that members of his family are currently in Poland, having fleed from Dnipro, Ukraine earlier this week amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Dmitri's two twin sisters, his brother-in-law and his niece are expected to arrive in Ireland early next week.

He says that with Dnipro being an industrial area, there is a real fear should the Russians capture the city.

"There is fear in Dnipro. The rest of Ukraine is under atrocious attacks. There is a fear that they want to expand the circle and claim Dnipro. They have destroyed too much. We have so many factories, plants and production lines in Dnipro - as well as heavy machinery, and heavy metal."

Dmitri returned to Ukraine briefly in 2014 to be with his second wife, and they returned to Ireland. He is appealing for anyone making donations and sending aid to the Ukraine to consider purchasing non-perishable goods.

"I would really, really deeply appreciate it. Every family, every second family - if they could just come into the local store, don't bother buying boxes of biscuits, boxes of cereal and this and that. Just get a little box of one product - five, ten, fifteen items. Whatever you can afford. Non-perishable items."
