Tributes have been paid after the death of former Waterford councillor, Geoff Power.
Mr Power served on the council for 13 years from 1991 to 2004, representing the communities of Dunmore East, Tramore and the surrounds. .
His Fianna Fáil colleagues have described him as an "honest and hard-working councillor" and messages of sympathy were offered at yesterday's plenary meeting.
Sinn Féin's Pat Fitzgerald was also a friend of the former Councillor Power.
"For those who didn't know him, he was a very genuine person," Councillor Fitzgerald said of his friend at Thursday's plenary meeting.
"He was a Fianna Fáil councillor for the Dunmore East area on a number of occasions and I even voted for the man myself at times!
"He was a great family friend. He was very well thought of.
"He was an excellent character and he will be very sadly missed by all in Dunmore East and our condolences go out to his family."
Councillor Lola O'Sullivan also served with the late Geoff Power.
Addressing the chamber, Councillor O'Sullivan said "Geoff was a wonderful councillor. We had some tough times here in the chamber and we also had some very good times.
"Himself and Dan Cowman were spectacular on every occasion here! He represented the Tramore electoral area and Dunmore East to the very best of his abilities."
In a statement, the sitting Fianna Fáil councillors said they were saddened to learn of the passing of former Councillor Geoff Power on Thursday, describing him as an "honest and hardworking councillor."
"Even after having left formal public service," the statement reads, "he continued to work right across the community for many years highlighting issues of rural plight, housing and community facilities. "He was a committed republican and his loss will be felt mostly by those who knew him best. "We remember his wife Sheila and extend our sympathies to Terry, Clodagh (Dawson), Jessie and Declan. Will be sadly missed by his brother Dick, sisters Ann, Pat and Rita, son-in-law John, daughters-in-law Michelle and Lorraine, grandchildren Robin, Charlie, Eoghan, Conor, Aoife, Aíne and Anna, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends.”Mr Power will be reposing in Tom Hennessy's Funeral Home, Johnstown today (Friday) from 5pm until 6.30pm.
His remains will then be removed to the Holy Cross Church, Killea, Dunmore East, arriving at 7pm.
Requiem mass will take place on Saturday morning at 10am, followed by burial in the adjoining ceremony.
