220 Transport For Ireland (TFI) bikes were officially launched in Arundel Square as part of a bike-sharing scheme today.
Waterford City and County Mayor John O'Leary launched the scheme that will see the bikes spread between 14 different locations across the city.
The stations include University Hospital Waterford, SETU, Arundel Square, The People's Park, The Kingfisher Gym, and The Mall.
Waterford is the fourth location to be part of the bike-sharing scheme. They are already in place in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick.
"We hope that people will really embrace the opportunity of a new system of getting around Waterford and seeing things in a different way and very healthy way," Micheal Ahearne of TFI told WLR.
He said that being on a bike allows you to interact with fellow Waterford citizens in a way that you cannot do in a car.
The bikes
The bikes have full-size wheels and smooth gears. In May, Fine Gael Cllr Frank Quinlan tested a bike and shared his thoughts.
"They're strong, they're sturdy, there's not changing of gears, you just twist the handle, they have a basket if you want to do a bit of shopping," he said.
There is hope that Leap Cards can be used for the bike scheme in the future.
