Tramore's Grand Hotel has been sold.

The hotel on Broad Street, which has been vacant since 2014, went under the hammer of Sherry Fitzgerald John Rohan Auctioneers yesterday.

It sold for close to the asking price of €2 million, with a large number of bidders - both local and national - involved.

The council had taken a derelict sites case against the previous owner, Guo Qing Wu, which concluded earlier in the year.

The derelict site notice was issued in 2018, after the council had been unable to get in touch with the owner.

A Dublin consortium has now purchased the property, but the exact identities of the individuals or groups involved has yet to be revealed.

WLR News understands they will take possession of the hotel in January and that they intend to start work on it straight away.

The hotel was built in the mid-1800s and has been described as "a monumental building" and an "anchor site" in Tramore.

According to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, the Grand Hotel "is of particular significance in the locality, attesting to the development of Tramore as a Victorian seaside resort in the mid to late 19th century."

However, the building was extensively renovated in the 20th century, losing much of the original fabric.
