Waterford Council is reviewing whether they can continue to issue summer parking permits for Tramore.
The council has said a recent audit found they have 'no legal authority' to issue the seasonal parking passes.
Director of Services with the local authority Fergus Galvin updated councillors on the current situation around the four-month permits this week, at this week's Metropolitan District meeting.
"We are currently reviewing the permits at the moment, due to all of the issues that arose from it in 2021 and I am not sure yet what the answer is on it yet.
"Our local authority auditor also raised concerns about it in their report which stated that we were issuing permits and we have no legal authority through by-law or otherwise to so do.
"That matter is under review at the moment as we don't want to go into the situation we were in last year," the Director of Services said.
One of the major issues that arose from the parking permits last year is the huge demand for the concession, with the passes selling out in a matter of hours.
Tramore Waterford City West Cllr Jim Griffin says applications for the permits are usually issued from today (March 31st), and given the current cost of living, the last thing that should be taken away is a discount.
"I know that last year there was a huge number of permits required and it went over the normal ask but they need to be retained.
"Instead, I would be asking that certain groups would be prioritised such as pensioners and people who might use the seafront if they're caring for someone with a disability.
"We're hearing it on the news bulletins day and night at the moment with the cost of living spiralling out of control and the hospital charges for parking at UHW.
"I certainly hope that it's not another money-making racket and the council wants to scrap the passes to make extra revenue from day-to-day parking," Cllr Griffin said.
