Two young girls were escorted back to shore by the Tramore RNLI this afternoon.

Pagers were alerted and a volunteer crew assembled at 1.40pm when they were alerted that two young girls on paddle boards had drifted out towards the middle of the bay at Tramore Beach.

The lifeboat was launched, with Lifeboat Press Officer Paul Tuohy outlining to WLR that the girls in question had become caught out by the wind.

“The wind has changed. Earlier this morning, it was blowing south easterly. It’s now going north easterly now so it’s blowing off the land and out toward the sea.”

The girls were successfully escorted back to shore to their waiting family, with no medical attention required.

Mr. Tuohy used the callout as an example to advise people not to go too far from shore when paddle boarding.

“It is a little bit of a warning. In this good weather, it looks so calm out there. I’m looking out over the bay now and it looks dead calm and lovely and flat. You have got to take into account the direction of the wind and what kind of a craft you’re riding on. Especially, the blow up paddle boards. They do take the wind, and the wind will take them out. We just escorted them back, we could have taken them in tow, but all was ok. I don’t think they had realised how far out they had actually gotten.”

The Tramore RNLI lifeboat has since returned to base.
