1. Katherine Zapone will not take up UN role

Former senator Katherine Zapone announced earlier today that she will NOT be taking up the post of special envoy to the UN for freedom of opinion and expression. It comes as she faced increased political pressure following the appointment. She said in a statement that criticism of the appointment process “has impacted the legitimacy of the role itself. It is my conviction that a Special Envoy role can only be of real value to Ireland and to the global community if the appointment is acceptable to all parties.”

2. Inquest held into Kanturk murder/suicide

The jury at an inquest into the deaths of a father and two sons in Kanturk, Co Cork in October 2020 has returned a verdict of unlawful killing in the case of Mark O’Sullivan and verdicts of suicide in the cases of both his father Tadg  and brother Diarmuid. The inquest heard that the father and son had been planning the murder for a number of days in a dispute over the family farm.

3. Bishop to allow Communions in Waterford

The Bishop of Waterford and Lismore says that first communions and confirmations ceremonies proceeding is vital to the "spiritual health" of our young people. Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan said the Church is "not trying to show muscle" in going against Covid guidelines by proceeding with ceremonies in August. Bishop Cullinan told Deise Today that the Church cares about the spiritual health of its young people who are suffering from a "huge lack of direction" at the moment.

4. Waterford Gardaí detect driver travelling over 200kmph

A driver has been caught travelling twice over the speed limit for national roads in Ireland by Waterford Gardaí. Gardaí from the Waterford Roads Policing Unit detected the motorist travelling at 206kph in a 100kph zone. The incident on the N25 near Newtown, Co. Waterford. Gardaí say proceedings against the driver will follow.

5. Manchester City close in on Grealish for £100 million

Manchester City are closing in on a British record £100 million (€117 million) deal for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish, according to reports. The Premier League champions have been heavily linked with the 25-year-old all summer and reportedly made their offer last Friday. Neither club have commented but there are widespread claims that negotiations have progressed and a deal could be concluded in the coming days.

6. Love/Hate star to appear in movie about homeless footballers

Former Love/Hate actor Tom Vaughan-Lawlor is slated to star in a new Netflix film about the annual Homeless World Cup soccer tournament. Leading The Beautiful Game, which has commenced production in Rome, will be Bill Nighy and Michael Ward. Nighy plays the coach of the English homeless soccer team who travel to Rome to compete in the global tournament.
