1. Crash in Cork kills 2
A bus driver and a pedestrian have died after a bus crashed in Co Cork this afternoon. The incident happened at around 1.30pm on the Strand Road in Monkstown. The driver of the bus is thought to have lost control of the vehicle, leading it to collide with a wall and parked cars. A child was also injured in the incident but is said to be in a stable condition.
2. Ireland completes deal to acquire 700,000 vaccines from Romania.
Great news that we have secured an additional 700,000 vaccines from the EU through Romania. These will be delivered throughout August and will allow us to continue to ramp up the rollout of the vaccination programme. 3. Over €14m for Waterford in Government Capital Plan for Health
€14.48m for Waterford has been included in the 2021 Capital Plan for Health which is expected to be published this week. Some of the money has already been allocated to the recently-opened mortuary at UHW, with €3.99m for the mortuary included in the overall amount. The largest allocation of funding is for the second Cath Lab at University Hospital Waterford, where construction started on the 17th of May.
4. Older people treated in 'ageist way' during pandemic
That's according to Bernadette Phillips of the Older People's Council. Speaking on Deise Today with Maria McCann, the former General Election candidate said that Covid has had a huge negative impact on the elderly. She says people need to focus on individuals within age groups and not just the collective.
5. Footage of JFK visits re-emerges after 40 years
Never before seen footage of former US president John F. Kennedy during his 1963 visit to Wexford has surfaced after a local woman who took the film found it in a drawer. Peggy Walsh, who is now 98 years old, was a keen videographer in the 1960's and took the 20 minute video of Kennedy during his visit to New Ross. It will be donated to the Kennedy Book and Research Archive and will be shown to the public for the first time on September 2nd.
6. Walrus spotted in Ardmore
A Walrus, which is thought to have travelled from the arctic, has been spotted in Ardmore, county Waterford after travelling around Europe. The beast was first spotted in Ireland in March after it's believed it travelled here on board a melting ice block. It has since been seen in Wales, Cornwall, France and most recently the Isle of Scilly. It's understood he was spotted around Dungarvan before eventually settling for Ardmore's stunning bay just by the Cliff House Hotel.
