Tents may have to be used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees in Waterford.

That's according to the CEO of Waterford Council, Michael Walsh, who foresees capacity being a major problem.

At present, around 500 Ukrainian refugees are entering the country per day.

Tents will end up being used

The council's chief executive says accommodation issues are already being felt at a local level:

"If I'm honest about it, and I think it relates to broader questions as to where this may go, I do not see the capacity.

"I do think tents will end up being a solution.

"The numbers available, relative to the available solutions at a strategic level - I can't see reconciliation of that at the moment."

Waterford Council's reception centres for Ukrainian refugees, have become the main source of accommodation.

Centres have been operating in Dungarvan, Carrickpheirish and on the Cork Road in Waterford city.

Hotels are also being used locally, organised by the International Protection Accommodation Service.

Michael Walsh also said the majority of hotel accommodation being used at present has been filled:

"There are really significant pressures at national level.

"Refugees are coming in at about 500 a day; the stream is reasonably constant. They've reduced a little bit to that number - they were higher.

"The vast majority of beds in terms of tourism accommodation and otherwise, have been completely consumed and as of now, the reception centres from the local authority are the main outlet - in community centres and in different locations."
