Tramore swimmers hospitalised with hypothermia

Tramore swimmers hospitalised with hypothermia

Two swimmers have been brought to University Hospital Waterford with hypothermia, having been caught in a riptide at the Lady's Slip in Tramore earlier today.

The incident unfolded at 11.30 this morning.

Chairperson of Water Safety Waterford, Lola O'Sullivan, spoke to WLR News.

"They are experienced swimmers who swim there every week - but they got caught in a rip and dragged out. They managed after much struggling to get to shore, where they were aided by a local man - Liam Sinnott, who was first on the scene. He called the ambulance. The swimmers were very shaken - they had hypothermia."

Swimmers are being advised to be wary of a drop in sea temperatures in the aftermath of Storm Agnes.

"We appeal to people that the beaches and their typography change after a storm - somewhere that you swim regularly might not be the same as it was last week. Please please be careful if you're getting into the water. Know what you're getting into."
