A Waterford priest has described an incident where another priest was assaulted over the weekend as shocking.

Fr Bobit Augusthy required hospital treatment after receiving six stab wounds on Sunday morning.

Yesterday, 22-year-old Anthony Sweeney of O'Connell Court, Penrose Lane, Waterford City was remanded in custody, charged in connection with the incident.

Fr Bobit is a chaplain at University Hospital Waterford and is now recovering at a friend's residence.

St Joseph and St Benildus parish priest, Fr Liam Power, has told WLR News that he's known him for a number of years.

"He brings a great vibrancy and enthusiasm. He's a wonderful character," Fr Power said.

Fr Augusthy often assisted in the St Joseph and St Benildus parish because of a shortage of priests.

Fr Power said they often have to rely on chaplains to fill in for priests.

He also described the situation as a "terrible tragedy."
