St Martin's Special School has been granted approval for extending the current building.

The extension will compromise of four special education need classrooms, four quiet spaces, and ancillary accommodation.

Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Mary Butler, made the announcement.

"This new extension to St Martin's will future proof the current facility to ensure extra capacity is provided. 91 pupils are currently enrolled for September 2022, with demand for places growing year on year," she said.

The whole school community moved into a new school at St. Johns Villas on Lower Grange, Ballyrtruckle in 2017, but more capacity is required to keep up with the rising population.

The co-educational school was first established in 1987.

It was built and designed to align with the special education and complex needs of all pupils that attend.

The positive news is great for the school after suffering from a period of recurring vandalism earlier in the Summer.

Principal of the school, Richard Ryan, told Damien at the time that the vandalism was "disheartening for the staff."
