55,000 Waterford drivers fined for speeding in last ten years

An average of 5,500 drivers a year are fined for speeding in Waterford.

That's according to figures released to Aontu under a Freedom of Information request.

From the 1st of January 2014 up to the 12th of September this year, 55,035 drivers in Waterford were issued with fixed charge penalty notices.

The worst year was 2015, when 8,119 speeding fines were issued - an average of 156 a week.

By contrast, 2017 was the year which saw the lowest amount of fines - at 3,021.

Up until September 12th this year, 3,746 penalties had been incurred.

The figures include both intercept and non-intercept detections from Gardai and speed vans.

The number of Gardai assigned to Roads Policing has also fallen by 18% in the last year - with just 659 Gardai nationwide assigned to roads policing as of September.
