Single men in Waterford city are waiting between 9 and 10 years for a social housing allocation.

That's according to Waterford Council's Senior Housing Officer, Claire Hartley.

During this month's meeting for the Metropolitan District of Waterford Council, the topic was raised by independent councillor, Joe Kelly.

He used the example of a local man to illustrate his point.

"This lad, a single man, is on the housing list 9 years, loads of applications for CBL and he is getting nowhere."

He asked: Where are single men in our process, they seem to be forgotten about in our process. This lad is four years doing the sofa-surfing bit and I'm asking with someone on the list nine years, is that not a likely amount of time that someone should be made an offer?"

Claire Hartley confirmed that the standard waiting time is between 9 to 10 years for an allocation to be made for a one-bed home

"She said, "Private rental accommodation would be the option before a social housing allocation. However, unfortunately that is the length of time on the list."
