Waterford Sinn Féin Director of Elections Michael Doyle has said the party is putting forward its largest-ever team of candidates for election to Waterford Council in next year’s Local Government Elections.

Speaking after 13 candidates received party nominations to contest next year’s local elections, Doyle announced his party Sinn Féin will stand multiple candidates in Local Electoral Areas across Waterford next June.

He said that tackling the housing crisis in Waterford would be the priority for Sinn Féin and that, should Sinn Féin be elected to national Government, a strong Sinn Féin Council team would be essential to delivering the major investment in housing that is needed.

 Mr Doyle said:

“In next year’s local council election, Sinn Féin is fielding our largest ever number of candidates for election to Waterford Council. This decision reflects the expansion and strength of Sinn Féin throughout Waterford, and our commitment to work for everyone.

"Our message will be one of hope, opportunity, the future, and positive change.

"The choice at the next election is a worsening housing crisis under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael or a Sinn Féin led government that will fix the housing crisis, once and for all.

“Tackling the housing crisis in Waterford is the big priority for Sinn Féin. If Sinn Féin has the chance to form a national Government, we will deliver the largest investment in housing ever seen in the State. It is essential that we have a strong Sinn Féin Council team to work with the national Government to deliver that programme for Waterford.

“Our clear objective is to elect more Sinn Féin councillors and increase the size of the party team in Waterford. We want to build locally on the progressive political leadership that Sinn Féin, through Mary Lou Mc Donald TD Uachtaráin Shinn Féin, and David Cullinane TD have been providing in the Dáil.

“We are committed to electing more female Sinn Féin representatives locally, and so at least  40% of our candidates seeking election will be women.

“This will give the electorate an unprecedented opportunity to significantly influence the gender balance of the local council chamber, and also promote the equality of women in local politics and society.

“Sinn Féin Waterford is standing a confident and experienced team of candidates combining age and different experiences.

“These candidates, are individually and collectively committed to working for all, by delivering positive, progressive leadership and change across Waterford City and County.

“Our 2024 election team is sizeable but also not yet complete and we will finalise it in the months ahead with additional candidate announcements” concluded Doyle.
