Seven wards in outbreak in University Hospital Waterford

Grace Rothwell, general manager of University Hospital Waterford says she has never seen the hospital as busy as it is at the moment.

Hospitals across the country are beginning to temporarily halt elective services amid rising cases of Covid-19 and 'Flu. The impact is also being felt in Waterford.

Today, while there are no patients on trolleys, the hospital is running at 64 patients over-capacity.

All off-site beds are full, there are 7 wards in outbreak status, and as of today, there are 37 Covid positive patients and 32 flu positive patients.

Some impact on scheduled surgeries is being experienced.

A national update from Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, is due later today.
