The Chairperson of the South East Technological University says expanding the Waterford campus won't impact their developments elsewhere.
Patrick Prendergast was appointed to the position just over a year ago, before the new university came into being in May.
It was announced last week that the SETU will be purchasing 20 acres of land at the former Waterford Crystal site, to create a new University-Enterprise quarter.
However, speaking to South East Radio this morning, Mr Prendergast says their plans to develop the campus in Wexford won't be affected.
"The Waterford Crystal site has been long in the planning as has the development of the campus in Wexford," he says.
He believes the two can develop alongside each other "as part of a holistic development of SETU".
"We shouldn't think of it as a competition between the different campuses - they're all integrated into one strong university."
He added: "We're looking at co-operation and mutually reinforcing the campuses rather than setting up competition. All are working in tandem."
Dr Prendergast says the strength of SETU is that "all the campuses are working in tandem with one President".
"We will have one unitary structure, one head of Finance, one Head of Operations etc."
He believes, overall, the number of opportunities to stay in the region for high quality education is going to increase.
"It's not just about increasing the number," he added. "It's the quality and type of education that's going to be important. We will have courses that are setting young people up for working in the region."
