Students who are interested in working the agri food industry now have a choice of four new degree courses to choose from
SETU, the South East Technological University, launched the courses at the National Ploughing Championships at Rathinska.
They cover the areas of Organic Agriculture and Agri Systems Engineering.
The BSc in Organic Agriculture is the only degree of its type in Ireland and Britain.
Programme Director, Dr Stephen Whelan, told WLR News that their new programmes are designed to feed into the new and emerging space that is organic agriculture
He said while working on the development of the degree, he and some people he was working with discovered a gap in the organic agriculture world, which was education.
"We really hope that because there's such a gap, there will be a good uptake of prospective students," he said.
The degree will complement the existing degree in Sustainable Farm Management.
Students will be well versed on the animal, soil science, and crops and therefore will be able to avail of a job in the general agricultural space.
They will have a specialism in organics but will still learn about general agricultural science too.
