It's the second suspicious death in Sligo since Monday, while there were also reports of an attack on another man in the town , who was assaulted and lost an eye.

However, it's unclear at this stage if any of the incidents are linked.

The man being detained is in his early 20's and his being held under section 4 of the criminal justice act.

Sligo based journalist Sorcha Crowley says he was arrested just before 2 o'clock this morning following intense Garda activity and backup from the Emergency Response and Air support Units:

"A few hours ago, following what they have described as intense local Garda activity and inquiries, they arrested a man in his early 20s in Sligo Town on suspicion of murder.

"They were also assisted by the Armed Support Unit.

"This man is being held at Sligo Garda Station and they are now appealing for anyone with any information on this incident to make contact.

"It's quite early at this stage to say if it's linked to the murder of Aidan Moffitt or the earlier attack of a man in Sligo Town at the weekend."

Gardaí are investigating whether or not Mr Moffit met his killer online.

The body of the 41-year-old auctioneer was found with "significant physical injuries" at his home at Cartron Heights on Monday evening.

A murder investigation is underway, with officers examining if a hate-related motive was involved.
