Samaritans' 24/7 awareness day underway in Waterford

Samaritans Awareness Day is underway today in Waterford and around the country.

The charity holds the event on the 24th of the 7th each year to highlight their 24/7 listening service.

It also forms part of their 'Talk to Us' month.

Catherine Whelan is Publicity Officer of Samaritans Waterford and the South East.

Speaking to WLR she says it's important that when somone is feeling down or in need of help that they know there's someone to reach out to:

"Samaritans, I suppose, have a special way of being able to listen to people.

"The training that our volunteers get is extensive and they're upskilling all the time and the skill is listening.

"Our main aim in Samaritans is that fewer people die from suicide but that doesn't mean that you have to be suicidal to ring Samaritans - you don't."
