Retail space at North Quays scaled back

Retail space at North Quays scaled back

The retail space for Phase 1 of Waterford's North Quays development looks likely to be a tenth of what was originally planned.

That's according to architect Hugh Wallace of Douglas Wallace, who's involved in the masterplan with Harcourt Development.

It had originally been envisaged that the retail space would amount to about 30,000 square metres but that has been pared back to between 2 and 3,000.

Speaking on Déise Today yesterday (Wednesday), Mr Wallace , who is a presenter on 'The Great House Revival'  and a judge on 'Home of the Year' said there will be no major shopping complex in the near future.

"It's not envisaged in the first phase," he said.

He added that the project's aim is to "extend people's experience in terms of their enjoyment of the city".

"There will be limited food and beverage, a hotel, an office block, apartments," he explained.

"Most importantly there will be a fabulous landscape boardwalk."
