The gap between renting a home and owning one in Waterford and across the country is widening, according to a new report.
Figures obtained by The Irish Independent show that in parts of Dublin it's now up to €300,000 more expensive to rent than to buy a home based on average figures.
The article by Charlie Weston has a county by county breakdown of the average monthly cost of rent versus the average repayment on a mortgage over a 30 year period, using figures from Daft.ie.
In Waterford, the average rent is now €1300 a month, whereas a mortgage repayment averages at €932; less than €300 a month, and a difference of €102,047 over the 30 year lifetime of a mortgage.
The starkest difference based on these average figures is in Dublin West, where a renter would end up paying €297,556 more than a homeowner.
The lowest difference is in Dublin South, where the average monthly mortgage repayment is €2,154 and the average rent is €2,258.
Recent figures from Daft show the average rent in Waterford City for the last period of 2021 was up 11.3% on the previous year. More here.
