A meeting of Waterford Council has heard that providing public toilets in Dungarvan may pose a risk of drug use and anti-social behaviour.
That's the view of Director of Services with Waterford Council, Kieran Kehoe.
At this month's Dungarvan/Lismore District meeting, Councillor Seamus O'Donnell (Ind) sought an update on public toilet provision in the town.
Kieran Kehoe said while the Council are seeking sites, they do have some reservations.
"We're currently examining sites. Any site we're currently looking at has issues in relation to servicing," he said.
"Any site has to be close to existing services. We don't want to put toilets in a location which removes car parking spaces or interferes with any current uses at that site."
He outlined his past experience of the provision of public toilets.
"My experience of public toilets, and I've said this before, is that they attract anti-social behaviour, drug taking and worse," he said.
"We have to make sure it's an open location with surveillance," he added.
