Gerry O'Mahony, aged 67, and president of the Irish Athetic Boxing Association (IABA) has been found guilty of the sexual assault of a 34-year-old woman on dates between January 1st 2009 and December 31st 2010.

The victim has retained her right to anonymity, however in court today, permission was made for Mr. O' Mahony, of 59 Murphy Place, Abbeyside, Dungarvan to be named.

A jury of 10 men and 2 women deliberated for approximately 4 hours before returning a unanimous verdict of guilty this afternoon, October 30th in Waterford Circuit Criminal Court.

Throughout the course of the trial, the 67-year-old had been remanded on continuing bail.

In June of this year, Mr. O'Mahony stepped aside from performing his duties as president of the IABA until such time as the criminal trial was complete.

Application for Bail

An application for continuing bail was made by the defense, citing Mr. O'Mahony's health issues stemming from a diagnosis of encephalitis 9 years ago.

This led to cardiac issues and a subsequent pacemaker, which is linked to University Hospital Waterford.

The DPP similarly made an application for Mr. O'Mahony to be remanded in custody until his date for sentencing on December 3rd of this year.

Judge Eugene O'Kelly considered both applications before saying he is not satisfied Mr. O'Mahony has any health issues which cannot be managed by the Irish Prison Service and therefore remanded the 67-year-old in custody until his sentencing.

He will appear before Waterford Circuit Criminal Court via video link on December 3rd with sentencing expected to get underway on that date or in early December.

The Trial

Today marked the fifth day of the trial, where Mr. O Mahony was accused of a single count of sexual assault against a female employee.

The court heard from the woman during evidence, who stated he was 'a father figure' to her from her early teenage years.

The court heard that he 'groomed' her with lifts home, cheap alcohol while underage, and offers to sell her knuckledusters when she was a teenager.

The court also heard evidence that Gerry O'Mahony gave the woman a drink, shortly after which she passed out.

On waking, she discovered her underwear and trousers were down and Mr. O'Mahony performing a sex act on her without her consent.

A deadline has been set by the courts for the collation of any necessary characters references and supporting documentation in advance of sentencing.
