It remains to be seen if the expansion of a global pharma company in Waterford will result in a major jobs boost.

It comes as planning permission's been granted for Horizon Therapeutics to expand it's operations here.

At the end of August this year, Horizon submitted a planning application for a new biopharmaceutical development in the IDA Business Park in Butlerstown.

They were looking to add a new drug substance facility and manufacturing capabilities.

Horizon first established themselves in Waterford last year when they purchased EirGen Pharma.

At the time, they kept around 40 of the existing EirGen staff and announced in May of this year that they would be hiring 50 more people.

Between Waterford and their global headquarters in Dublin, around 200 people are currently employed by the biotech company.

When this latest application was submitted in August of this year, the company told WLR that if planning was granted it would lead to 350 new jobs being created locally over time.

Conditional permission has now been granted by Waterford City and County Council.
