Permission has been granted for an extension to Waterford Retail Park.

It's expected that retail giants, B&Q and Decathlon will anchor the new site.

Monaco Properties Limited has been given the go-ahead by the council to construct an L-shaped extension to the existing retail park in Butlerstown.

However, conditions attached to the permission for the unit that French sports retailer, Decathlon, will be in, specify that only 20% of the floorspace can be used for the sale and display of items.

The same condition has been put on the warehousing unit where it's expected B&Q will be.

Both units have to be used for the sale of bulky goods only, with the reason given that this would minimise potential impacts on the city's central retail areas.

This was a concern which had also been shared in an objection on behalf of Merry People Limited, who own Lisduggan Shopping Centre.

Meanwhile, an application by Monaco for a standalone three-storey building to accommodate office and/or medical related uses has been denied.

Planners felt that because it would be within a retail warehousing park, which is not served by public transport, it would be contrary to the City and County Development Plan.

The extension that has been approved falls just shy of 10,000 square metres.
