The National Public Health Emergency Team has recommended an end to mandatory mask-wearing.
The move would take effect from February 28th.
The recommendation will now be brought to government and, if accepted, it will mean that wearing a mask will no longer be a legal requirement on public transport, in schools, in retail premises (including pubs and restaurants), and in public offices.
However, the measure will still be required in healthcare settings.
NPHET met earlier today to review the situation and a letter from the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan, will now be sent to government.
9,441 new cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed today through PCR and antigen tests logged on the HSE portal.
