'Not an inch of New Ross!': Wexford councillor hits back at Waterford politician

A local Waterford TD has suggested New Ross should be included in the municipal district of Waterford.

Matt Shanahan made the call while in the Dáil earlier this week.

"The reason for looking for the extension for the boundary is to try and get the more cohesive strategic planning within the City of Waterford, and to give us proper access to the city's north side. I do recognise the greater integration and cooperative agreements between Waterford and Kilkenny.

"We have a second issue which is the recognition of the metropolitan boundary in Waterford City. In Waterford, we are not allowed to take in Tramore, an administrative metropolitan boundary that has a population of over ten thousand people. It should extend in fact down to New Ross."

In response, councillor Michael Sheehan, Chair of News Ross District Council, responded to Shanahan earlier on Deise Today.

"Not an inch. Not an inch of New Ross not an inch of Wexford will be moving any boundaries. In that piece by Deputy Shanahan, he mentions the Nuts Analysis, and I think that's where we agree... It is a bit nuts for Deputy Shanahan to say that.

"The Nuts Analysis is [the name given] to a regional review, where they look at the statistics and say what areas are doing good in comparison to others.

"In the Southeast, it is the Nuts Three Analysis. Deputy Shanan's point doesn't stand, as you are not going to get greater investment in Waterford by increasing the population. It is actually going to take it away."
