Nine Men's Sheds in Waterford will be among those to benefit from €800,000 in funding.

Waterford Estuary, Portlaw, Déise, Kilbarry, Dungarvan, Lismore, New Community, Shedworx, and Waterford Mens' sheds will be getting €2,000 each.

The funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development is to help these groups with running costs like electricity and insurance.

The initiative was announced by Minister Heather Humphreys.

Men’s Sheds help tackle isolation and provide a welcoming and comfortable space for men to come together and socialise.

Michael Cass is the PRO and founder of the Dungarvan Men's Shed.

Speaking to WLR News, he said this funding means they can focus on their purpose.

"It means that we can focus on offering a place and an atmosphere and a culture where people can relax instead of having to do fundraising activities," he said.

Michael also said that this funding allows the Shed to focus on improving the quality of lives of members.

"When you have a little bit more money, it allows you to do more things and as a result of that we're able to do more activities," he said.

When sharing what the money will be spent on, Michael said it will help to pay their bills.

At the moment, their phone and broadband bill is €1,000 per year. The cost of hiring a bus for activities is roughly €500.

As well as these bills, the price of power, and the cost of groceries, the Shed are also looking into some maintenance. A floor needs attention and the works have been estimated to be €10,000.

"Every quarter we're looking for money," Michael said.
