Two new veterinary colleges are set to be announced by government today.
It's believed the new schools will be located at the SETU campus in Kildalton and at Atlantic Technological University.
The Taoiseach has said from listening to farmers and vets across rural Ireland there is a need for a regional balance in the provision of veterinary services.
It's expected the formal announcement will be made at the National Ploughing Championships at Ratheniska this afternoon.
There have been ongoing calls for the establishment of such a college at SETU by numerous representatives in recent months.
UCD is currently the only provider of veterinary medicine and UL withdrew its interest from establishing such a course last week.
